Before Starting...

The Blooming Words program is beneficial for all children, with or without language difficulties. Nevertheless, if you are concerned about a child’s language, the program should ideally be preceded by a few preliminary steps:

  1. Detecting language difficulties
  2. Making a request for speech therapy

Screening for Language Difficulties

When language difficulties are suspected, it is recommended to use validated screening tools. These are questionnaires and observation checklists used to compare the child with other children of the same age, based on scores.

In Quebec, contact your nearest CLSC for free access to the Agir tôt screening platform. A resource person can help you complete the screening tools, interpret the results and refer the child to the appropriate services. Screening tools are available not only for language, but also for other development areas (e.g., motor skills, behaviour, socialization, sleep).

Making a Request for Speech Therapy

For children aged 0 to 5, all you have to do is call your nearest health centre to make a request for speech therapy. The receptionist will be able to guide you through the process.

In most regions, you do not need a doctor’s referral to consult a speech therapist. In Quebec, for example, the Agir tôt screening platform may be offered as a pre-referral service.

Starting a Language Stimulation Program

Language stimulation is everyone’s business! There is no need to wait for speech therapy to support your child’s development. The Blooming Words program offers a series of language stimulation training sessions to become familiar with simple, practical and effective language stimulation techniques. Techniques you will be able to use every day with fun!
